Eminem ‘Recovery’ album has hidden message: Subliminal shot at Lil’ Wayne

by Jack Posted June 24th, 2010

My good friend Jeremy was like Tom Hanks in the ‘Da Vinci Code’ these past few weeks with the new Eminem CD out, trying to point out a hidden message it contained. I was like ‘Get the fuck out of here!’ every time he tried to explain it to me, like he was talking straight ‘bull shit.’ Until I sat down with him and he went over every bit of evidence and had me buying that shit like it was a Google share at $2.

Let me introduce this theory by recapping the background between Shady and Weezy. During Em’s hiatus, which was the time Wayne was at the top of the rap game, Wayne expressed interest in doing a song with Eminem but was blown-off by the rapper who was in recluse. Rumors circulated that Em was plotting a record dedicated to diss Lil Wayne, which Eminem even acknowledged in this latest album, “I almost made a song dissing Lil Wayne.” As Em began his comeback he attributed his slights at Lil Wayne to his drug abuse, and ended up collaborating with him on ‘Forever,’ and ‘Drop the World.’

So why would he diss Lil Wayne now?

First things first, lets go over Eminem’s approach towards this album. Basically Em has created a world within this CD by making ‘hip-hop’ the coveted object he is vying for amongst the rest of the rap game. He makes it obvious in the song ’25 to Life’ about the setbacks that come with being a famous rapper. The other not so obvious metaphorical representations of ‘hip-hop’ being the object of affection is ‘Seduction’ what seems to be referring to his ‘mack’ and how he can take your girl in an instant, but that girl is actually rap, just like it was in ’25 to Life. The lyric to kick the song off “I feel like I’m morphing, into to something so incredible that I’m dwarfing all competitors” is one to consider, but another one that is the convincer “There’s a 7-disc CD changer in her car, and I’m in every single slot and your not.”

For all of those people that still think he’s stuck on Kim, he only refers to her once. The songs ‘Space Bound,’ and ‘Love the Way You Lie’ are about the connection Em has with ‘hip-hop,’ not his ex-wife.

This world that Em sharpens up with his mind-blowing imagery is the key element in the CD to tie everything together. Notice there are re-occurring figures throughout the album, from celebrities like Michael J. Fox, and Elton John, to the multiple references towards fruits, and animals, to the biblical references, the seasons like winter and fall, holidays like Halloween and Christmas, superheroes, the need to refer to every bit of currency, motor-vehicles, and every component of time from, second, minute, day, year, light-year. Basically all of the components that would make up any sort of society. And if you think it is a coincidence let me reiterate the redundancy of the usage of these terms, each term occurs more than once, sometimes a lot more than once.

The two prominent figures in this world, which could be described, as the ‘Land of Hip-Hop,’ which Eminem has created in the CD, is he, and Lil Wayne.

Now pay attention.

The smoking gun in all of this is Lil Wayne’s verse in ‘No Love.’ Everything Lil Wayne said in that verse was used by Shady and taken from its simple layers that Wayne fashioned them with, to more extensive complex expressions Eminem used them with, almost as if to say ‘Anything you can do, I can do better.’

Exhibit A: Wayne starts out the verse, “Throw dirt on me, and grow a wildflower, but it’s FUCK THE WORLD, get a child out her.” Eminem in ‘Not Afraid’ says “Forget the EARTH HE”S GOT THE URGE TO PULL HIS DICK FROM THE DIRT, AND FUCK THE WHOLE UNVIVERSE.” Also, Wayne says he’s “Married to the Game” in ‘No Love,’ and Em says the same thing in ‘Not Afraid.’

Coincidence? Maybe, that’s what I thought to, but lets continue.

Some circumstantial evidence is that a lot of the words Wayne used in that verse like ‘bar,’ ‘back,’ ‘bleed,’ and ‘fire,’ are used continuously by Eminem but multiple times in one sequence, “I’m so tired of this I could blow, fire in the hole, I’m fired up so fire up the lighter and the dro.”

Another example of the beefier evidence is “Bitches try to kick me while I’m down I’ll break your leg (Wayne’s line)” In ‘Cinderella Man” Eminem says, “It’s a rap, I was down, when I was down I was kicked-I got up, I’m ‘bout to punch ya to the ground, YA TRICKED, IT’S A TRAP.” Then Wayne says “You want me up in the cage, then I’ll come out in beast mode” in the same song Em says “Caution to the wind, COMPLETE FREEDOM, look at this rappers, how I treat them, so why the fuck would I join’em when I beat’em.” Then Em goes on in the same song saying “When I rip this stage and tear it in half tonight.”

Another bit of evidence is, in the ‘Forever’ track Wayne says “Let the KING talk, check the price and pay attention” Eminem in ‘Not Afraid’ says “You said you was KING you lied through your TEETH, so for that fuck your FILLINGS instead of getting crowned your getting capped.” It is worth noting Lil Wayne needed eight root canals before entering jail.

And here is the ‘out of the ball park,’ kill-shot, “Lil Wayne slurps syrup ‘till he burps and smokes purp does a WORDSEARCH gets circles (W)RAPPED AROUND it like you do when I come through just to remind yourself what the fuck I can do.” Is a Shady line in the song ‘Won’t Back Down.’

If you pay attention to the CD you will notice a lot of lines that could tie in with this whole argument. To dismiss them as coincidental is foolish, because without even acknowledging this theory, you have to acknowledge Em’s meticulous approach with his wordplay throughout the album.

So why would these subliminal lines serve no purpose with someone as attentive, crafty, clever, and deliberate as Eminem?

-Just want to reiterate my good friend Jeremy came up with this theory; I’m just basically the messenger right now.

What I don’t get is that people are on here chirping others for taking some time to review a CD… You are taking time to read the review.. and the comments… to read the article and all comments on this site your looking at a good half hour.. probably more to these half wits.. who are so busy to look deeper into a new cd by one of the biggest rappers of our time.

  5. Tommy S says:

It seems that you care enough to comment. Way to stick to your guns chief.

  6. he's good says:

I think it’s perfect Eminem style to hold back from hatin’ on someone when he’s not ready to back it up. Now he is on top of his sh*t and he’s that good that he brings Wayne on his album and Sh*ts all over him in front of the whole world, with his words, with his rhymes, better longer bars, with words with dual meanings, of course some of what you people are saying is true is Eminem for C sake, hes got all kinds of little things about all kinds of people all through the album, Wayne included. Some of what people have said on here is really reaching but alot of it is perfectly rational

  7. Ray-Ray says:

Lol that’s a slick white boy I swear he talking shit about a great rapper he done did records with also thats on his new cd & Lil Wayne dumb ass ain’t smart enough to figure it out Lmao..I love it!! I’m not surprised it happened Eminem never liked Lil Wayne if your a real Em fan you should know… But who’s better?

  8. steadymobbinchick says:

    Ray-Ray , i guess youre a major idiot!!!!!!!!!

  9. he's good says:

@steadymobbinchick ya know he takes shots at people all the time and you know he’s good enough and slick enough to do it. If you’ve been listen to em since the start you would know

  10. Derty Rhymer says:

get outta here man. Come on you lookin too much into it. Eminem wouldnt waste his time doing subliminals, not like this. If he wanted to diss wayne he’d do it straight out. You tryna find sumn thats not there homey.

  11. Tommy S says:

Waste his time? He’s a performer, this is what he makes a living off of.

  12. Kim says:

eminem in particular makes a living off of how he exhibits the truth and tells it like it is. so no, he will not waste his time doing subliminal messaging, and even though he’s a performer that is not what he makes a living off of. if he wanted to diss wayne, he would just do it.

  13. Samantha says:

Nope. Both Lil Wayne and Em are part of the illuminati.
Both songs are about the illuminati one supprots the other doesn’t.

  14. Tommy S says:

Why just do it, when you can craft lyrics with such creativity and thought, and form it into a riddle, which is more impressive than just doing it? All of you think, ‘ Eminem isn’t a pussy, and wouldn’t do a subliminal diss.’ It’s not about that at all, but you all seem to lack comprehension so I don’t know how successful I will be explaining it to you anyway.

  15. Billy Smith says:

Eminem is beat up… lil Wayne doesnt even care what he is saying… just getting more publicity because of eminem’s spite

  16. he's good says:

exactly right Bill, AND NOW ….AND NOW, people qho dont believe Em would spit a few lines to his competitiors even the doped out one sitting right next to him in the studeo while his dubass sits in the backfround and cheers him on. Hes to effed on the dope, i just drank a whole bottle of prmeth.m bout ten xan, somed a sliff, and we will say toook 3 roxies, and Id be damend if I agreed to do a snong like that fucked up or not. Wayne, Kanye, Drake, and a coupl of others got called straight the f out by eminem. So far no-one has anything anywhere close to call payback, they are not, will not be, and will never be on his status …. Print out the lyrics then go read them while you listen yo yhe whole album, you will see, it will blow your frinkin mind.

  17. Jeremy says:

Exhibit A: Wayne starts out the verse, “Throw dirt on me, and grow a wildflower, but it’s FUCK THE WORLD, get a child out her.” Eminem in ‘Not Afraid’ says “Forget the EARTH HE”S GOT THE URGE TO PULL HIS DICK FROM THE DIRT, AND FUCK THE WHOLE UNVIVERSE.” Also, Wayne says he’s “Married to the Game” in ‘No Love,’ and Em says the same thing in ‘Not Afraid.’

Married to the game? Isn’t that an expression that many rappers use? Lil Wayne – Playing With Fire
Kanye West – The Glory. Too Short – Married to the Game.
OMG is he dissing them now too?
If you listened to the WHOLE song, and didn’t just select verses that sound similar, you’d realise Not Afraid’s verse is about Himself/Slim Shady.

Where in that verse does it say “Bar” Back” or even “bleed?”–

Another bit of evidence is, in the ‘Forever’ track Wayne says “Let the KING talk, check the price and pay attention” Eminem in ‘Not Afraid’ says “You said you was KING you lied through your TEETH, so for that fuck your FILLINGS instead of getting crowned your getting capped.”

Because lil wayne mentions king it’s him?

    List the whole lyrics..
-Ok quit playin’ with the scissors and ****, and cut the crap
I shouldn’t have to rhyme these words in the rhythm for you to know it’s a rap
You said you was king, you lied through your teeth
For that **** your feelings, instead of getting crowned you’re getting capped-

    Now consider this:
First off isn’t it “Fillings” not “Feelings”? Secondly, T.I.’s “Paper Trail” had a whole bunch of shredded pieces of paper on it cut with “Scissors”? Eminem’s “Relapse” cover seemed to be a play off the “Paper Trail” album. Plus you have the obvious “King” reference. (And remember that seemingly subliminal diss on “Mosh”?)

It seems more likely that he’s dissing T.I – self confessed king of the south (with several songs stating that such as The king and King of da south). Also did a song with GAME who isn’t really close with eminem after the whole G-Unit incident.

  18. KoooolAid says:

    Aha,
I believe it. Eminem needs his crown .

  19. Billy Smith says:

You know your cool when you put “KooooolAid” as your nickname on a post. Beat it kid.

  20. Tommy S says:

Jeremy, Sure ‘Married to the Game’ is a overused hip-hop reference, but it is continuously used by Lil Wayne, and it is the essentially the theme of Em’s album. ‘Bar’ is referenced many times, including, ‘lift the whole liquor counter-up cause i’m raising the bar.’ including other references to it also.

He pronounces ‘feelings’ and ‘fillings’ to make it sound like he is using either one to complete the metaphor he is using. Sure T.I is notorious for claiming to be ‘King,’ but Wayne claimed it on a song with Em, and as you can see, Lil Wayne is a character in this album, from either being featured, or mentioned in one of Em’s lines.

Your other bone about writing the whole lyric is aimless. It’s not like I’m leaving out a key sequence to take it out of context, so to complete it would be more of a waste of time.

The theory may seemingly have holes. But it’s a theory, not saying it’s 100% true, but there is quite a bit of evidence to say that he is aiming at someone. At the very least you can agree the CD is about Eminem taking his platform as one of the best rappers again based on the content, and the themes of the songs? ‘Seduction’ is a song about how hip=hop wants him and not these other rappers.

  21. Shane says:

I think Eminem and Wayne (i’ve been a bit hesitant to like Wayne in the past, but i think i’m growing warmer to him) are both slick enough to sub-diss each other and pick up on it, but why can’t two rappers talk shit about each other in friendly battle? The title of the song is “No Love” and between the two of them AND their verses, there is No Love. So it could either be they both know the other is dropping bombs and they respect the game enough to know it, or they’re doing it for fun. How many times has Eminem said he’s bored without battling, such as the last few lines of “On Fire?” Or how about in ‘Till I Collapse “I would rather sit back and bomb some rappers.” Battling doesn’t always have to be degrading stabs at other rappers. And let’s face it, Eminem CLEARLY doesn’t do or believe in everything he says.

  22. jeremy says:

yo check out this interview… go to around 1 minute funk flex asks wayne if he thinks em is dissing him on not afraid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2CARjUCuJA&feature=related

  23. Vendetta says:

Eminem was with illimunati en now he is dissing wayne and T.I because there still in it

  24. just pointing out says:

just want to say in not afraid, its FEELINGS not FILLINGS

  25. Tommy S says:

I’m just pointing out that when he says ‘feelings’ he says it in the form of a double entandra, (a technique often used by rappers) to complete the metaphor he is using by making the terms dually represented in their similar pronounceations. Hence the remark about the dental procedures. So in you trying to be a smart-ass and disprove the theory, you actually come out a dumb-ass.

  26. Tommy S-s-s-sucks cock says:

Tommy sucks dick. end of story. he likes putting hard boners into his mouth until they fill him up with cream.

  27. Tommy S says:

You remind me of Pee-Wee Herman, when he used to twist and pull his knob in movie theaters. Except you do it to the ’2 Girls-1 Cup footage’ at your work place.

  28. brewhaw says:

These are not subliminal verses tucked away cleverly in a song, they are in fact thrown right out there for all to hear. This is not speculation it is fact. Lil Wayne isn’t all that good. Look through your I pods tell me how many Lil Wayne songs you have that he is not collaborating with someone else. He isn’t all that good by himself although his no ceilings mixtape is definately one of his best works. Em came right out of the gates spitting fire although his last album and maybe even the one before that I would do nothing more than wipe my rectum with. This album let us all know who the king was and if Lil Wayne would let those dreds out and relieve the pressure from his brain he would know he just got smoked!

  29. Syrus says:

It’s definitely a stretch but some of the points you made are kinda crazy. Thing is now they keep doing shows together and i dont think he’d get on stage with him at the emmys if there wasnt a mutual respect between the two, and though im not a big wayne fan, he killed it on the recovery CD, on the other hand Em KIIIIIIILLLLLED IT

  30. Nick Ferro says:

check out the music video of “not afraid” — he takes shots at wayne every time they focus on his nike shoe. and also when he says “everybody” in the beginning.
(em in recovery)”so sip piss like syserp through a straw, then describe how it tasted like dessert to us all”
(kanye-through the wire) “i drink a boost for breakfast an ensure for dizzert, somebody order pancakes i just sip the syserp”

  31. Nick Ferro says:

i have theories that eminem wrote verses for B.O.B in airplanes (verses about em in bob’s verse). Em mocks Jayz’s (ah– in doa) in seduction. Moreover, Wayne has fired back at em in his new song right above it. ask for more if you want details

  32. Nick Ferro says:

In cinderalla man, cinderella man refers to eminem and jayz making it complicated. (cinderella man as jayz) “who can catch lightning in the bottle, set fire to water, commin out the nozzle on the fire hose flyout, and squat us”
(cinderella man as em) “fuck catching a lightnin, he struck it, screamed shut up and thunder, flipped the world upside down and made it rain upward”

also, “who forms pyramids and raps circles around square Lyricists”

em refers to himself as the guy with the tank top and the nike shoe (look at im not afraid music video)

cinderalla man is tricky– try not to get confused by em

  33. Nick Ferro says:

on recovery, the track “so bad” is about rihanna completely.

wayne and drake fire back at em at rihanna’s expense in his new single with drake– right above it.

“beautiful black woman, i bet the bitch look better red” (rihanna’s hair is dyed red)

  34. Nick Ferro says:

    theres alot more

  35. Nick Ferro says:

regarding the airplanes song, haley is featured- haley is em daughter

  36. Nick Ferro says:

i know im stretching it in almost a paranoid kind of a way, but i am convinced eminem is going after anyone prominate in the rap game subliminally

  37. Dr.Wizzkid says:

Em isn’t the type of guy to subliminal-diss someone. He could just simply go and say FUCK LIL’WAYNE on national tv. Now, this article says that Space Bound and Love the Way you Lie are actually referring to hip-hop. I highly doubt this because there is a line in Going Through Changes that goes hand in hand with these 2 songs : “You just had your heart ripped out and crushed” which can only refer to Kim or whoever the fuck he dated during this time.
Now, he says : “The two prominent figures in this world, which could be described, as the ‘Land of Hip-Hop,’ which Eminem has created in the CD, is he, and Lil Wayne.” … mmnnaaah…if you look closely, Slaughethouse it’s on the CD too,Itunes bonus but still.
About the line “married to the game” … What rapper didn’t say that at one point on his career. When I read this, at first I remembered a Nas line that says the same thing.
“Wayne used in that verse like ‘bar,’ ‘back,’ ‘bleed,’ and ‘fire,’ are used continuously by Eminem but multiple times in one sequence, “I’m so tired of this I could blow, fire in the hole, I’m fired up so fire up the lighter and the dro.”” … okay…this line is from On Fire which is recorded way back in summer ’09. Em couldn’t predict what Wayne is going to say on No Love and as far as I know, No Love was recorded after Drop the World.
At the other lines in No Love Em is referring about other wack rappers.
“Eminem in ‘Not Afraid’ says “You said you was KING you lied through your TEETH, so for that fuck your FILLINGS instead of getting crowned your getting capped.”” I dont know about this one. Matter of fact, if you check the Recovery booklet, at Not Afraid lyrics, it isn’t feelings it’s fillings.
About the line in Won’t Back Down … that was simply for fun.

  38. CHRISSS| says:

Eminem isint the type of guy that would just diss someone..Eminem would have a fucking good reason before he diss anyone

  39. Bommar says:

No rapper is in the Illuminati.
Anyone who believes that is a fucking idiot.

Seriously, a secret society that the Catholic church DESTROYED 200 years ago that was made up of SCIENTISTS, suddenly reemerges with rappers in it.

You deserve to die if you believe that.

  40. eminemfan says:

I think it makes sense the getting crowned & capped part cause after he says and to the fans who else was he talking to?

  41. Ryan says:

You guys need to start thinking more outside the box. Eminem’s Recovery album is about something much deeper than some foolish Lil’ Wayne diss.

  42. Tommy S says:

Ultimately it is about him reclaiming his prominence in hip-hop. That’s why there are such tracks like ‘Cinderella Man’ which characterizes his resurgence after being down and out. Then there are such tracks as ‘Seduction,’ ’25 to Life,’ ‘So Bad,’ ‘The Way You Lie,’ etc. That express his tumultuous, but yet affectionate relationship with hip-hop. ‘White Trash Party’ is a satire on the content base of hip-hop today. And there are lines throughout the album where Eminem expresses his aggravation for not being viewed as a great, ‘When you spoke of people who meant the most to you, you left me off your list.’

In order to reclaim the throne he once owned he needs to triumph the current perceived kings of rap, and he does that by illuminating his superior skills, and backhanded compliments and disses to how how much better he is. So as far as the depth of the album, that is it.

  43. MR eNVi says:

Ok here that’s really smart shit u said or ur friend
But I also have somthin to add.. I myeslfe happen to know mathers
An now the shit is he’s talking smack on the illuminati. Just hope that goes well a he won’t end up like tupac

  44. Juliet says:

This is bullsheeeit. You’re reading way too far into the CD; you’re only finding these pieces of “evidence” because you’ve set out to search for them. If you walk into this CD looking for Mariah disses, you’ll find them. If you walk in looking for Kim references and even love songs, you’ll find them. However, this doesn’t mean that those references are valid, or that you’re interpreting them the right way. Anyway, the same goes for Lil Wayne disses–you’re walking in expecting them, so you’re interpreting lines in a way that they weren’t necessarily meant to be interpreted. Because you’ve set out to look for a specific thing, you’re finding lines that COULD–but not necessarily SHOULD–be interpreted multiple ways and twisting them to fit your hypothesis.

A perfect example: I’ve heard from many that the album is scattered with references to Mariah Carrey, someone Em had previously been dissing repeatedly on tracks like The Warning and Bagpipes from Baghdad. If you dissect Recovery, you’ll no doubt find a bunch of lines that could be taken as messages to Mariah. However, Em has specifically said in an interview with Vibe magazine that he’s done with Mariah and that his last reference to her was on Cold Wind Blows, the first track on Recovery: “It’s kind of like the last thing I said about her was on ‘Cold Wind Blows.’ I made the comment. I don’t want to keep beating a dead horse. I’m not even going to comment about it. I’m done with that whole situation. I said what I had to say. I’m done.”

  45. Juliet says:

In addition, he’s talking to a ‘you’ the whole time in Won’t Back Down. To argue that the word search line is directed at Lil Wayne is to argue that the entire song is directed at him–something that I’m sure none of you would agree with. The song basically contains Eminem’s bragging about his skills as a rapper while showing them off in the construction of the lyrics.

Anyway, let’s take a look at these few lines:

Bitch, am I the reason that your boyfriend stopped rapping
Does a bird chirp, Lil Wayne slurps surp
Til’ he burps and smoke purp
    Does a word search
Gets circle wrapped around it like
You do when I come through
I’d like you to remind yourself
Of what the fuck i can do when I’m on the mic
Or you’re the kind of girl that i can take a liking to
Psych I’m spiking you like a football
Been this way since I’ve stood a foot tall
You’re a good catch with a shitty spouse
Got a pretty mouth and a good jaw

These lines are also argued to be about Mariay (“Bitch, am I the reason that your boyfriend stopped rapping?”…”You’re a good catch with a shitty souse/got a pretty mouth and a good jaw”…etc)…basically, you can read into it what you wish. If you want it to be about Mariah, you can find things that seemingly support that–same goes for Wayne. Like I said in the last post, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true.

In simplest terms, the word search line is just another form of Em’s bragging on this track. The ‘you’ isn’t necessarily Lil Wayne, or anyone else for that matter. To reiterate, he’s talking to a ‘you’ for the whole song, claiming to be superior to whoever that ‘you’ may be. I, personally, don’t believe it’s anyone specific; it feels as if it’s just a personification of the entire rap/hip-hop industry that Em is claiming to be superior to.

    He’s just stating the obvious.
Am I the reason that your boyfriend stopped rapping?
Well, does a bird chirp? (yes) and does Lil Wayne slurp syrup until he burps? (yes) and smoke purp? (yes) Does a word search get circles wrapped around it? (yes–you circle the letters that make up the word.) From there, he goes on to say “like you do when I come through,” with which he’s only stating that he raps circles around other rappers, thus implying that he’s much better than them.

  46. jeremy says:

Juliet, i think you’re only failing to see the evidence because you set out to deny it. If you don’t believe Eminem would diss lil wayne on the CD, you will take any piece of evidence and throw it out as a “coincidence”. It is only once you realize that he’s dissing him that you can finally appreciate all the hidden wordplay in the cd. Just pretend for a second that Eminem would be crazy enough to do that… then go listen to “cinderella man” and it might start to make sense to you

  47. LSG says:

Oh I like what “Shane” said on August 23, 2010. I pray that shit is true coz Em is finally back, and wayne is the shit. For them to take each other on just to see who has betta skills would be perfect. It would be like they sharpening their skills by taking each other on. Both are lyrically hot I think wayne could surprise us on how deep he can get with his lyrics

  48. Juliet says:

    Jeremy,

Nice try, but you just took what I said and flipped it. However, there’s one flaw in your logic: I didn’t set out to deny the evidence. Originally, I DID believe that Em would diss Wayne, but I was convinced otherwise by simply reading through the lyrics and taking interviews I had heard with him into account.

Nice try, again, but you did disregard all of my main arguments. Read what I said over, and if you’re going to attempt to debate this with me, try to actually rebut to my statements.

  49. infinite says:

shut up bitch ima let you finish in a minute

  50. LSG says:

The video is stupid though. If a kid who is getting bulled tries that shit out in real life…… He’s gonna get “knocked the fuck out”(lol)
